Unearthed
An Interactive Fantasy World
Welcome, Java Cup judges.
My group's applet, Unearthed is one of those special entries
that require a network feed to be fully appreciated. Our entry is a
multi-user fantasy world that allows people to interact
with each other. Consequently, our applet needs to be run
over a network.
I will try my best to keep the server up but in case the server is unreachable
when you go to judge it, I have included a ready to run copy of my server.
The server is written as a java application and the main class is located
at unearthed/server/MudDaemon.class so it can be run with the command
java unearthed.server.MudDaemon
If you do end up running my server, please keep the following in mind:
- If you want users to be able to connect from remote machines you
have to be running a web server on the same machine. My server runs
on port 1469 so there shouldn't be a conflict. My code requires that
users connect to the same machine that the code came from, thus
making it harder for users to make hacked, malicious versions of the client.
- If you want to test the program with a large number of users,
please allocate a larger stack size - I plan on allocating a stack size
of around 40m on my server just because I'm paranoid...
Also, please note that users will most likely not be able to use
the applet from behind a firewall. I haven't actually tried using it
from behind a firewall, but based on past experience with java
network programming I would assume that it would throw a security
exception. I trust this will not be a problem since I previously spoke
with contest officials about this and I was informed that the contest
would not be judged from behind a firewall.
...sorry for the long intro
